The aim of the article is to substantiate the role of teacher’s portfolio in the processes of professional development and career planning. With this aim in mind we answer two key questions: a. how adults learn and develop and b. what role can the portfolio has in these processes. We define portfolio as an instrument which enable teacher to regulate his own professional development. We establish the critical reflection and self-evaluation as crucial process of the professional growth. Then we explain these processes also as the basic elements of portfolio creating. We illustrate the content of developmental portfolio and show up some exercises the professional should do during his or her portfolio creating.
