Abstract

Self-harm is a common occurrence among adolescents in Slovenia and elsewhere. Self-harmful adolescents are confronted with a variety of problems and distresses. Because they cannot properly express their distress and emotions, they choose self-harmful behaviour as an emergency exit, which they understand as a strategy of survival.

Research shows that every fifth adolescent is self-harmed. As teacher educators it is important for us to recognize self-harmful behavior and to offer help to the child. When revealing self-harmful behaviour, it is necessary to take appropriate action and seek professional help for the child and the parents. Above all, it is our job to show understanding and help the child to find appropriate patterns of behavior.
